In this day and age, it’s typical for a person’s worth to be judged based on their number of followers on social media. Our society bases self-worth on accomplishments and materialistic values. Finding self-worth through achievements is fine as long as success is maintained, but perfection is unobtainable, so when we fall short of achieving those goals, what does that mean for our self-worth, and how can it become problematic? If people only feel worthy when society acknowledges their accomplishments, they will strive to keep that spotlight by continued success. Not only is it mentally exhausting trying to keep that spotlight it can be potentially harmful. Studies have shown that basing self-worth on external factors can cause stress, anger, and conflicts in relationships https://www.psychalive.org/self-worth/. Self-worth doesn’t just make you feel good about yourself; it’s crucial to have good mental health. The only downside is how we base our value it’s okay to toot your own horn once in a while, so long as you do it for the right reasons, you can’t judge worth by comparing with people or things you’ve accomplished because those things are not you, just the things you have done or things other people have done. Instead, why not dig deeper and look at the things that truly define you, things the outside world played no part in like, being kind, brave, understanding, or a good listener? These particular qualities are what make us individuals. Self-worth also plays a role in your relationships with friends and romantic connections. You’re not going to be attracted to someone that doesn’t believe in themselves or thinks negatively about themselves, and if someone acts too self-important, it would probably be a turn-off. The key takeaway from this is rethinking how you view yourself can significantly improve your way of life.
